On Saturday, I posted on Instagram a picture from the latest stop on my work-related world tour. It was a shot from inside a diner that has been created inside an old railcar – Frank’s Diner – in downtown Spokane, Wash. It got 18 likes – and thank goodness for that; it’s the basis of my self-worth – and one comment from a friend. Actually, the comment was a hashtag: #Spokompton.

I was floored. That’s a thing? (more…)

A few hours in Flagstaff

I’ve got the title all picked out for the book I’m never going to write: 48 Hours in. Give or take, that’s how long I inhabit a city for most work trips. It’s long enough to sample the local flavor – literally usually – without being forced to stare at its exposed guts. Rare is the place that can’t be interesting or livable for two days.

The latest stop: Flagstaff, Ariz. I’d heard of it, sure, but had never been. I left with no regrets from the visit. (more…)

One of the worst things about having an oversized family wrought with health issues is that it’s virtually impossible to leave home as a group for an extended period of time. But this week, with our first real trip as a group of six on the horizon, that immobility feels more like a positive. (more…)

Podcast: Back to South Africa

Fury is heading back to South Africa. No, not for good – for a family wedding.

That’s all the excuse TV needed to rattle off a bunch of ignorant questions about the Rainbow Nation. (That’s really its nickname – Google says so.)

Here’s a link to the podcast.

TV will spend countless hours staring at this over the next nine months.

Considering how much time I spend operating one, my lack of knowledge about cars is fairly astounding. The school year starts today in Sioux Falls and soon at South Dakota State, meaning I’ll spend more time than I can easily count on the road and in the air, traveling back and forth and here and there. It’s part of my job as a sports reporter – a big part of it, sometimes.

Take the back half of last week, for example. (And I write this despite fully acknowledging that travelogues are arguably as uninteresting as retroactive play-by-play of a round of golf or a hand of poker. That’s never stopped me before.) On Thursday evening, I drove 50 miles from Sioux Falls to Brookings to attend a two-hour football practice. I made the return trip, too. Friday morning, it was off to Minneapolis to cover a Vikings preseason game. That’s 4 hours each way. I got home at 4 a.m. About six hours later, I was headed to a muddy field near a town called Renner to run an obstacle-laden 5K.

Certainly, not every three-day span from September to June is like that, but many of them are.

And I generally love it. (more…)

It’s not every week that we kick things off with a podcast.

Then again, it’s not every week that Fury heads to South Africa to visit his in-laws.

That is the subject of today’s discussion: Travel to and exploration of South Africa. Fury has done this before, and this time he sets the stage for what sure sounds like a pretty sweet adventure that’s likely to include some warm-weather penguins.

That’s just the tip of the iceberg. (See what I did there?)

Anyway, here’s the link.

I’ll be holding things down here by my damn self for the next few days. So take it easy on me.
